Tramadol is a unique compound with both a moderate mu-opioid effect (when compared to classic opioids) and a moderate monoaminergic effect (when compared to tricyclic antidepressants). Tramadol has a more acceptable side-effect profile in comparison with tricyclic antidepressants and antiepileptics.
